"This is of course a matter of taste and there are different opinions. But some of my experiences I do like this: I stud my horseshoes from when it starts to freeze on the ground. As a safety both for my horses, the unaccompanied horses and the people who will handle them. Roads become slippery to and from the pasture. It can be dangerous if an unbred horse slips, you do not know where the legs go. I much rather take a tramp or kick injury than a fan injury that is much more difficult to treat. I use the smallest spikes so the slope of the hoof is not so big when the horses are wearing them all the time. Keep an eye on the ground when loading and unloading your horse when transporting in winter. You may need to be stud when unloading. I wear studs all season."
